My Background and Expertise

I am Dr. Bill Owen, a seasoned physician with a rich background in internal medicine and a deep understanding of LGBTQ health issues. My illustrious career spanned over four decades, during which I treated countless patients and became a respected authority in HIV care.

Born and raised in Philadelphia, I pursued my undergraduate degree in chemistry and medical degree at Temple University. After completing my residency in internal medicine at Baystate Medical Center in Massachusetts, I went on to complete a fellowship at the University of California San Francisco.

A Trailblazer in LGBTQ Healthcare

My commitment to serving the LGBTQ community led me to co-found one of the first organizations of LGBTQ physicians, the Bay Area Physicians and Healthcare Advocates for Equality (BAPHR). Additionally, I authored one of the first peer-reviewed medical journal articles addressing gay health issues in 1980.

Navigating the Early Years of HIV/AIDS

Early in my career, I witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of the burgeoning AIDS epidemic. This experience fueled my unwavering determination to support and care for patients during this challenging period.

Retirement and Continued Involvement

I officially retired in 2017 but my passion for medicine remains unwavering. I actively contribute to the field by attending medical rounds at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and engaging in online discussions on HIV prevention and care.

Beyond Medicine: A Passion for Travel and Learning

Beyond my medical pursuits, I am an avid traveler and have a deep curiosity about the world. My travels have taken me to various destinations, allowing me to experience diverse cultures and expand my knowledge. I am also an enthusiastic learner, delving into the study of Portuguese and exploring various historical and cultural aspects of different regions.
